Notes for Nancy Dickinson
NANCY DICKINSON MATTHEWS;
daughter of Robert Dickinson Jr. (Dickerson) and Unknown. She was born Bet. 1770 - 1771 in Cumberland/Moore Co., NC, and died October 01, 1844 near St. Marks, Meriwether County, GA, at the home of her son Rev. Willis D. Matthews.
At the time of her death, she was living with Rev. Willis D. Matthews, near the Olive Branch Church in St. Marks Georgia, just north of Greenville GA. (Source: Original Daily Journal of Rev. Willis D. Matthews, now in Alabama State Archives.)
Nancy was the wife of James Matthews, who died in late 1827 in what is now Anderson County, South Carolina.
In 2001, I "found" her monument in the Old Olive Branch Burying Ground back in the woods and hidden from view unless you go back in there. At that time I had no camera. I could barely make out "MATTHEWS" at the top, and NA__Y;
BO__ ----
DIED OC ___.
The old monument, which is similar in form to that of her son Rev. Willis Dickinson Matthews located in the Sunny Level Cemetery in Tallapoosa County AL, is cracked and decaying rapidly. I had a camera this time (July 2010) and could not make out much. I resorted to the "no-no" of shaving cream without much success. I thoroughly cleaned off the stone with spray water before leaving.
