ROBERT ANDERSON, “Defender of Fort Sumter,” b. at “Soldier's Retreat” his father's place near Louisville, Kentucky, 14th June, 1805; d. at Nice, France, 27th October, 1871; the United States man-of-war, the Guerriere, was sent over for his body, and he was buried at West Point; appointed by President MONROE to West Point Military Academy, and graduated in the 2d Artillery, 1st July, 1825; from 1st October, 1825 to 24th July, 1826, was Private Secretary to his half-brother Richard Clough ANDERSON, Jr.,
