From Some Alabama Pioneers by Madge Pettit: “Anthony SEALE 2nd is the pivotal link in the SEALE family line in America. Probably 95% of those bearing the SEALE name in America descend from this man. He was a tobacco planter and a surveyor of roads in Prince William County, Virginia.” Anthony and his father operated a ferry across the Rappahannock River between Hayfield wharf and Conway’s warehouse in MAY 1726. Anthony Jr. lived on land owned by Joseph Berry in King George County, and his father lived on land owned by John Taliaferro in Essex County on Mount Creek. In SEP 1726, Anthony SEALE “the younger” and “heir at large” of William SEALE sold to Thomas Turner the 200 acres on Chingateague Swamp which belonged to William SEALE, who had left the area about 7 years before, leaving “no lawful heirs of his body.” James Markham, son of Elizabeth Markham SEALE, was his bondsman. That was the land which William SEALE had bought from Samuel Wharton in 1713. Anthony Jr. bought land in Stafford County in 1728 from probably Ezekiel Hill and either Edward or John Graham. These deeds were recorded in Deed Book L which is no longer extant, but they were shown in the Index of Deeds for that period. That land fell in Prince William Co. when it was formed in 1730. Anthony used neither “Junior” or “the younger” when he signed his name to records in Prince William Co., so his father must have been dead by that time.

At a meeting of the Council held at the Capitol in Williamsburg on the 27 APR 1738, Anthony was appointed one of the Justices for Prince William Co., and as such, “Gentleman” was added to his name in the records. Young son, John, was given a cow by Thomas Dallas, his friend and neighbor, in MAR 1739. Anthony was to receive one cow calf and all male calves produced by John’s cow for taking care of the animal for his young son. Anthony’s name appeared on the 1741 Poll List of Prince William Co. in the election of Burgesses for the county. That area was in Hamilton Parish until Dettingen Parish was formed in 1745. Anthony was chosen to serve on the first Vestry of Dettingen Parish Episcopal Church. He and others were sworn in at the Vestry house at the Quantico Church (Dumfries) on the list of JUN 1745. Anthony served on the Vestry of Dettingen Parish for at least twelve years and was then succeeded by this eldest son, William. The 1747 list of Dettingen Parish Tithables exists. The parish of the Anglican Church was in Prince William County. Included on this list are James Muse and his slave, Belinda, as well as Anthony SEALE. Anthony paid tythes for William, Thomas, Charles and Anthony SEALE who were all over 16 years of age as well as slaves – Duke, Dick, Ben and Letty. Anthony was appointed churchwarden in APR 1748. Among his duties was that of collecting tithes from all those who lived in the parish. In NOV 1749 he was ordered by the Vestry to collect 31 pounds of tobacco from each tithable person because that was the parish levy for that year. Anthony received a Land Patent from Thomas, 6th Lord Fairfax, on 1 FEB 1751 for 130 acres that joined the land he already owned. In JUL 1752 Anthony was appointed sheriff. The court records show that the consistently complained of the “insufficiency of the gaol (jail).” Later his sons William and John were sub-sheriffs of the county and his assistants. Found in Virginia Census, 1607-1890 as Capt Anthony SEAL; State: Virginia; County: Prince William County; Township: Rental Rolls; Year: 1753; Record Type: Rent Roll; Virginia Early Census Index. Found in Virginia Census, 1607-1890 as Capt Anthony SEAL; State: Virginia; County: Prince William County; Township: Rental Rolls; Year: 1760; Record Type: Rent Roll; Virginia Early Census Index. Anthony deeded 125 acres of his land to his son, John, in JUN 1762. Found in Virginia Census, 1607-1890 as Capt Anthony SEAL; State: Virginia; County: Prince William County; Township: Rental Rolls; Year: 1767; Record Type: Rent Roll; Virginia Early Census Index. In FEB 1768 Anthony and Anne of Prince William Co. and John and Sarah of Fairfax Co. deeded 196 acres to William Brown of Prince William Co. The land joined that which William Brown already owned. William Brown married Elizabeth SEALS Buckner, the widowed daughter of Anthony SEALE, but it is not known whether they were married at this time. Found in Virginia Census, 1607-1890 as Anthony SEALE; State: Virginia; County: Prince William County; Township: Rental Rolls; Year: 1773; Record Type: Rent Role; Database: VA Early Census Index. Found in Virginia Census, 1607-1890 as Anthony SEALE; State: Virginia; County: Prince William County; Township: Rental Rolls; Year: 1777; Record Type: Rent Role; Database: VA Early Census Index.

Anthony left a Will which was dated 18 AUG 1781 and recorded 5 NOV 1781. The will of Anthony SEALE 2nd (Prince William Co., Virginia Will Book G, page 130-132) named his wife and 7 children - including sons William, Thomas, Charles, Anthony 3rd, and John SEALE. Estate returns for Anthony’s estate include records of a payment to Thomas SEALE for Charles’ share of Anthony’s estate. The executors were his sons, Anthony 3rd and John, and his son-in-law William Brown. The inventory of the estate of “Capt. Anthony SEALE” was made and appraised on 2 JAN 1782 and recorded 4 MAR 1782 by Newman Matthews, Henry Ringo and John Farquson. The sale of estate was recorded 18 DEC 1789. Members of the family who made purchases at the sale were Anne SEALE (the widow), John SEALE, Sr. (son), John SEALE, Jr. (grandson, son of John Sr.), Anthony Seale (son), Richard SEALE (probably grandson, son of John), William Brown (son-in-law), Anthony Buckner (grandson, son of Elizabeth SEALE Buckner Brown), and Ann Cornwell (granddaughter, daughter of Elizabeth SEALE Buckner Brown.) John SEALE died before the estate was settled as this his sister, Elizabeth Brown. Thomas SEALE, Sr., Anthony SEALE, Jr., and William Brown were paid full shares of the estate; Thomas SEALE, son of Charles, William SEALE, and Dorothy Stribling were paid smaller amounts which indicated that their father had already given them a share of his estate. Sarah, wife of John, and Anne, the widow, were not mentioned, so they, too, must have died by that time. The settlement of estate was dated 17 OCT 1781, but it was not recorded until 6 APR 1790. Ann Bristow SEALE survived her husband by a few years [conflicting information here.] On 10 OCT 1781, she deeded the slaves, Samboe and George, and the furniture left to her by her husband’s will to her son, John, to take care of her for the rest of her life. The deed was recorded 7 MAY 1782 and witnessed by Henry Wilson, William Norman, Robert Jarvis (probably son or Richard Jarvis), John Rollings and John SEALE, Jr. It is not known when Anne SEALE died, but she must have died before her husband’s estate was settled.
