Notes for George Stovall Oglesby
One of the original commissioners of the town of Palmyra, Lee Co., Georgia [1840], along with John Woolbright, John Mercer, Burch Roberts, and Edward Janes.

In 1850 Cobb Co., Georgia, census is listed under occupation as "Property Hotel," worth $4500. This census was enumerated July 31; the family also appears in the 1850 Lee Co. census, which was enumerated Sept. 9, listing him as a farmer with $10,000 in property. The family was in all likelihood visiting family in July in Marietta, returning shortly afterwards to Lee County. Interestingly, all of the ages are slightly different in the two enumerations!

From History of Lee County, Georgia, p. 27: "George S. Oglesby was one of the commissioners of Palmyra, Georgia, when it was incorporated in 1840. He was appointed a trustee of Palmyra Academy. He served in the Georgia House of Representatives 1843-1845." His property in Palmyra was sold in 1851. [Notes of Mrs. Louise Aldrich, personal letter to David A. Oglesby, 6/5/1989]
