Notes for James Rousseau Sr.
James Rousseau, John's son, was a resident of Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia, when he married Miss Lavinia Few, daughter of Ignatius Few and Mary Frail Hicks (see Few genealogy). James and Lavinia married in Columbia County, Ga, 1 February 1810, and made their home in Milledgeville. In 1811 James served as Secretary to Georgia Governor David B. Mitchell. He was Justice of the Peace for 320th District, Baldwin County from 1813 to 1817. In 1815 Milledgeville had 170 occupied homes, 1599 inhabitants, 14 dry goods stores, 20 groceries, wholesale and retail and a number of offices. Milledgville was the capital of Georgia until after the Civil War.

In 1811 James was appointed guardian of his wife's brothers Camillus and Crassus Few. In 1812 the Columbia County Court named him guardian of Lavinia's sister Lodoiska. In the 1820 census for Baldwin County, the enumeration listed 3 males under 10, 1 male 10?16, 1 male 26?45, 1 female under 10, 2 females 26?45. The male 10?16 would probably be Camillus; Crassus had become the ward of his half-brother, William Few, and Lodoiska had married Augustus J. Brown.

James' brother William died in 1815 and James was the administrator of his brother's estate. Brother Thomas was in the service of his country.

There were records of three marriages in Baldwin County who were possibly daughters of James and Lavinia. They were: l. Emerline M. Rousseau to Augustus J. Abbott 13 Aug 1837 2. Sarah Rousseau to Charles W. Choate 8 Feb. 1839 3. Matilda Rousseau to Joseph G. Rains 3 Dec. 1840

James Rousseau was killed in a mishap 15 June 1824. He jumped from a stagecoach in a runaway accident en route to his home in Milledgeville. His widow married William B. Snead 26 April 1827. Lavinia Snead died in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia, at the home of Augustus J. Abbott, 10 December 1848 at the age of 54. This was probably the home of her daughter Emeline Rousseau who married Augustus J. Abbott 13 August 1837 in Baldwin County, Georgia. (He was born in Canada). The 1850 census lists Augustus, age 36, clerk and E.M. (later shown as Emeline) age 31; James A.S. age 12; a son (name was unreadable) age 9; Charles M. 6; Sarah Jean 4; Laura H.3. In the 1860 census they were in Henry County (Abbyeville) Alabama and listed as follows: Augustus Abbott 46, farmer born Canada; Emeline 45, born Ga.; James 22, born Georgia, Schoolteacher; Charles 17, Ga.; Sarah 13, Ga; Antonett 11, Ga; Rosey 10, Ga.; Dianna 4, born Alabama. In the 1850 census of Columbus, James Russeau 20 and John Russeau 14 were listed in a household only 5 houses away from the Abbotts.
Notes for James Rousseau Sr.
Following the death of Ignatius Few, James Rousseau was appointed guardian of his brothers-in-law, Camillus and Marcus Crassus. On May 4, 1812, the Columbia County Court named James Rousseau guardian of his wife's sister Lodoiska, and at the same time made William Few - oldest son of Ignatius, the guardian of Crassus. James Rousseau in Marshall's District, Baldwin County, was a fortunate drawer in Georgia's 1820 Land Lottery, receiving land in Section 1 of Appling County. In the Baldwin County census of 1820, James Rousseau was enumerated with three males 0 to 10, one male 10-16, one male 26-45, one female 0-10, 2 females 26-45. The male in the 10 to 16 age group could be Camillus, since James and Lavinia didn't marry until 1810, their children would not be old enough. Lodoiska was married by this time. James Rousseau was killed in a mishap June 15, 1824. He jumped from a stagecoach in a runaway accident en route to his home in Milledgeville. Lavinia married William B. Snead in Baldwin County, April 26, 1827. She died at age 54 at the home of Augustus J. Abbott in Columbus, Georgia, December 10, 1848. This may have been the home of her daughter, and son-in-law. Emerline M. Rousseau Married Augustus J. Abbott on August 13, 1837 in Baldwin County.---GenForum, http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/print.cgi?rousseau::711.html
