Notes for James Rousseau Jr.
James and Emily were listed in the 1840 census in Muscogee Co., Ga.: James Rousseau-?1 male 20?30; 1 female 15?20. James' occupation was listed as commerce. In the book "Columbus, Georgia 1827?1865", James Rousseau was listed as having a grocery and dry goods store called Rousseau and Choate. A Sarah Rousseau married Charles W. Choate 8 February 1839 in Baldwin County, and Charles could have been James' brother-in-law. On 15 March 1842, a fire started in their frame building, destroying it and many other places of business along the west side of Broad Street including a grocery belonging to A.J. Abbott. The fire was believed to be deliberately set. "The origin of the fire was a mystery. Some persons entertained the sus- picion that Messers Rousseau and Choate fired their own store for the purpose of obtaining the insurance, which was large. But a committee of Council, appointed to investigate the matter, made a report fully exculpating them and stating facts which showed the suspicion to be unreasonable and unjust". Rousseau and Choate reported losses of $10,000 each, and Abbott reported loss of $5000. James had many land transactions in Columbus, Muscogee Co., Ga. between 1839 and 1850.

By 1850 James and his family were living in Russell County, Alabama. James was listed in the census as a farmer, born in Georgia, age 34. Emily's age was listed as 29; children were Laura age 7; Frances age 4; * Lucy age 2, all born in Alabama. They had a daughter, Mary O., born in 1851.

James died in late 1854 in Russell County, Alabama. His will was written in September of 1854 and proved 6 January 1855. He wrote of his wife and children, but did not name them. He appointed his wife Emily F. Rousseau and (her uncle) Charles A. Brown and Lawrence Dorsey of Muscogee Co.,Ga.,as executors. Records of the May and June terms of the Court show Emily petitioned the court for dower setting forth the fact that she was the widow of James Rousseau and was posessed of certain lands (giving the description of the land). She stated that James died leaving three children, Laura L., Lucy E. and Olivia M., all of whom were minors. A guardian was appointed by the court to protect the interest of said minors. Daughter Frances, listed in the 1850 census, must have predeceased her father. I find no mention of Laura after the court records in 1855.
