Augustus was appointed postmaster of Abbeville, Alabama May 6, 1854 and served for seven months.

BIOGRAPHY: Augustus' mother-in-law's half brother Ignatius A. Few was appointed in 1827 as a Commissioner by the Governor of Georgia to establish Columbus a "trading town." This could explain Augustus' and his brothers move from Milledgeville to Columbus, a potential area of opportunity for the Abbotts. Augustus and Emeline were married in 1837 and had moved to Columbus by 1840 when their second child was born.332
